In a commonly used process called the Kraft Process, commonly used in the pulp and paper industry to produce pulp, wood and chemicals are cooked in a digestor to remove the ligins and sugars, the waste from the digestor is know as “Black Liquor” and is typically burnt in the paper mills (Recovery Boilers) to generate electricity. The burning of the black liquor may produces high level of emissions. Various by-products containing hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, and other volatile sulfur commonly known as total reduced sulfur (TRS) are the cause of the malodorous air emissions which sometimes result from disturbance situations such as when the mill is shut down for maintenance.
